Seven Wonders

Cambodia’s Angkor Wat temple complex

Last year I had the chance to vote on the new 7 Wonders website to replace the old and busted seven wonders of the world. This past week they announced the new seven and my choice, Angkor Wat, wasn’t on there. How can Rio’s statue of Christ the Redeemer beat this out?

So it got me thinking…what are some wonders of the my tech world?

  1. Gmail- 2GB storage and growing. I have all of my email accounts forwarded here as well as gmail forwarded back by way of back-up. The best spam fighter, threaded email conversations and built in chat make it nearly unbeatable.
  2. Firefox- custom themes, endless add-on extensions, Greasemonkey scripts, better security and its been my browser of choice for a couple of years.
  3. Flickr- unlimited community photo sharing. Close 2nd: Zooomr
  4. Wordpress- the free blog hosting company is hard to beat
  5. iTunes- yes it is bloatware but it organizes my music/videos/podcasts like nothing else
  6. Del.icio.us- online social bookmarks. Works great since I have multiple computers
  7. FeedDemon- this desktop feed reader coordinates with the free web-based Newsgator so I can read my 200+ feeds online or off. How cool is that?

Since I am an early user/adopter of new web-based technology and services, it is very difficult for me to try something and stick with it in my everyday web usage. These are the exceptions and my seven wonders of the tech world. There are more of course, but it wouldn’t fit the theme very well, would it?

What are your seven wonders? Add them in the comments!

Windows Live Hotmail

live mail So like everyone else in the nineties, I had a Hotmail account. Also, due to limited dial-up choices back then, I signed up for MSN mail. I’ve maintained that @msn.com account for far too long. The only reason why I didn’t ditch it completely was for the sole purpose of getting Microsoft beta invitations, Tech net news, Office news and certification news. Over time, the junk mail I get is ridiculous.

Even though Microsoft has a new design and bumped up the storage in your account, it did little by way of protection.

Today, I got myself a new account with their as-yet-release of their @live.com addresses. How? Shoot me a comment and I might be able to tell you, but it was super simple and probably won’t last long. The official release won’t come until late summer/early fall.

So why bother with Microsoft mail when Gmail is my main squeeze? Simple answer. For the beta invitations, Tech net news, Office news and certification news. No one else is getting my new address and I won’t have to filter through the promises/lies of a bigger bust, or hair growing from my kidney remedy.

New Web Apps To Discover & Use

Recently I have been invited to test more than a few pieces of exclusive software & web applications. Some are enough to make you turn your head while others just make you wish you should have kept on going without looking.

I’ll have full write-ups & reviews soon, so stay tuned. In the mean time, here is what I am testing/suggesting:

Grooveshark is a P2P music share site for DRM-free MP3s. Once the uploader is installed, you can load files to the web component SUPER fast. From the web you can download/play music with their online player and socialize. This site looks like it has/will have some good audio mojo!

Veoh is another hot little desktop/webware application that allws you to record online video like you would record television with your DVR.

8Apps is (currently) a suite of 3 web-based applications to help organize your work including the very nicely done Handshake which connects your contacts and helps you make more. Orchestrate will help with collaboration and Blueprint assists in your project/time management.

Gleamd is a kind of “why bother”? Not impressed with it’s people search function so far. It also has a very pronounced “in-crowd” or popularity factor. Are we in high school again? I’d go with Spock, if I had a choice. Oh, I do.

Like I said previously, once these apps are tested properly, I’ll give a more detailed review. Until then, enjoy your day!

Pownce Invitations

Pownce logo If you’ve ever used Twitter at all then you know how nearly addicting it is to have someone update you constantly about what they are doing no matter how boring/exciting  you think it is. Pownce is similar but a bit different too. You can read & send notes to your friends. Pownce is a project co-developed by Kevin Rose of Digg/Revision 3 fame and Leah Culver.

You can enter/read notes in two ways: one, web-based. Do it all online. Secondly, you can download an application. If you do not have the new Adobe Integrated Runtime (AIR) which is a bit like Flash, then you will have to download that first. Links are provided on site.

Upon signing into the desktop client, you are all set to start sending notes/links/files & events to your friends! Be sure to add me as a friend so we can see what you are up to.  How do you do this? Glad you asked! I have six invitations to share and will do so for those of you who are bored with Twitter and can explain how Pownce is different than an instant messenger. Have fun!

**Update** all gone now, sorry!

**UPDATE** I have 6 more invites…come & get em! (Ask nicely)

Spock: People Search…fascinating

People search A new search site, Spock, is nothing like your typical search engine. Spock is a personal search that helps users find and discover new people. Currently the search service is invitation only while they continuously add/update the millions of profiles, celebrities, public figures, etc.

When logging in for the first time, you are  able to supply contacts from multiple accounts such as Outlook/Yahoo/Gmail/Hotmail/AOL/Plaxo/LinkedIn/MySpace/Friendster, etc.   After this, build your profile as much as you want with tags such as “photographer”, “geek”, “mother”. Add your photograph for a personal touch. Enter as much as you want if you want people to find you.

Now for the fun part. I have three (3) invitations to join the invite-only Spock. Want one? Tell us in the comments section about how you would use this search! Best of 3 wins!

The Mojo’s profile is here

**Update** sorry, they are all gone!

**Update** I have 101 free invitations! (ask nicely)
