Monday Mobile Mojo

Posted in October 1st, 2007
Published in 2.0 Mojo, Mobile Mojo

On Mondays here at Techno Mojo, I want to highlight mobile applications that have good “mobile mojo”. I’m looking for mobile apps that are not handset specific such as third party iPhone apps or only works on the Nokia 65 series phones. They must be somewhat universal. I’m also looking for interaction with others via text or MMS.

Add your suggestions to the comments and let’s see what you can come up with!

Today, I want to showcase a few social media wallpapers provided by lirontocker. Download them free to your phone from Flickr.

Web App Of the Week- Picnik

Posted in September 27th, 2007
Published in 2.0 Mojo, Photo Mojo

There is a huge influx of web-based photo manipulation software out there but I want to focus on Picnik which just came out of beta testing and is ready to serve. We’ve mentioned Picnik before and thought it was worth mentioning again now that it has officially released. There are both free options and a $25 annual subscription. The difference is in the filter effects, text, framing and icons that you can access.

This week only, everyone can have access to all photo tools to wet your whistle and have you salivating enough to open your wallet.

Picnik has just added access to your Photobucket account as well as previous favorites, such as Flickr and Picasa. You can search, upload, edit and save to your photo accounts with ease. Downloading to your computer or printing for use is a snatch.

Picnik Adds New Editing Features

Picnik’s user interface is fast and fluid. Click a button and it just moves for you. Very nice touch to your digital workflow. This web app is highly suggested for people on the go or who doesn’t have access to Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, etc.

DisplayFusion

Ever since I have had 2 monitors on my home computer and at work, I have been trying to find a free application that allows you to have different desktop wallpapers for each monitor. Well, I finally found one and I am impressed.

DisplayFusion from Jon Tackabury and Binary Fortress Software, is a free download. It not only manages to stretch and fit your screens width and height perfectly, you can even search Flickr for free photo wallpaper from any user!

On the left is a screenshot showing my 2 wallpapers merged together. The right screen displays the option to have 2 different wallpapers. My step-mother has expressed a lament that she has to choose which of her 2 grandchildren get photo wallpaper space and now she doesn’t have to play favorites! The awesome canoe photo is from an artist on Deviant Art but I couldn’t find the name again. The artist gets the credit, not me.

If you long for different eye candy on your screens, check out DisplayFusion.

As seen on Cybernet Technology News Thanks guys!

Feeding & Digesting

Posted in September 26th, 2007
Published in 2.0 Mojo, Techno Mojo

For a few years now, I have ingested ginormous amounts of content from the internet through RSS feeds I have subscribed to over 300 website’s RSS feeds. This prevents me from visiting each website individually and aggregates them into my feed reader of choice, which is currently Feed Demon. In the past I have tried most readers and really liked Bloglines and Google Reader. Feed Demon is paid desktop software while the other 2 are free web-based apps. But it is your choice in how you want to be served!

So what do I do with all 300 websites that generate on average 3 posts a day each? How does anyone assimilate and digest that much mental food? Let me clarify here: I don’t read ALL of them. In fact, I scan over a few posts to find anything of interest. When I do find something relevant and noteworthy, I’ll read it and use it. If I can’t use it then,  I will flag or save that post for future reference. Think of it as a bookmark to go back to when you have the time or pass on the second helping, thanks.

Also, when flagging for future use, I will highlight a link and tag & save it to my Delicious bookmarks, again, insuring that I will see it and use it.

So when picking through the buffet of web content I chose the finest morsels, feeds that will enrich me and make my world more productive and fun. According to Feed Demon, my top ten feeds I pay attention to (this week) are:

1.      Lifehacker

2.      Mashable

3.      Cybernet Technology News

4.      Boing Boing

5.      Webware.com

6.      TechCrunch

7.      Web Worker Daily

8.      The Terminal

9.      Laughing Squid

10.  Read/Write Web

If I want to see what is going on in the internets, I can view all of the aggregated Popular Topics from the past 48 hours (as of 9/26) according to all of my feeds.

1.      MySpace launches free mobile service

2.      Sketchcast blogging tool

3.      Wordpress 2.3 released

4.      Diigo social annotation tool

5.      Microsoft plans to invest in Facebook

6.      One Laptop Per Child

When feeds include audio or video podcasts, you can bet that they are either consumed on my desktop or transferred to my iPod so I can feed while on the go. Get your brain fed while you work out or commute to work!

That is one of the arguments for RSS feeds: Your news brought to you and consumed by you in the manner and times of your choosing.

Cuckoo For Yahoo

Posted in September 25th, 2007
Published in 2.0 Mojo

I’ve been a big fan of Yahoo services for quite awhile now but have been lured by other web apps for comparison. In an attempt to "go back" to Yahoo, I will try to use nothing but Yahoo services for one month. Here’s what I am switching to or use consistently already:

Yahoo Mail- When I started using Gmail a 2 years ago, I was blown away. The only thing that Gmail has going for it now in comparison is threaded conversations and search. Yahoo has trumped Gmail’s 2GB storage with unlimited storage. Chat is now loaded, SMS texting is offered (not for everyone yet, including me) and you can drag/drop emails into folders. So what happens when people send me mail to my Google account? No problem. I have had it forwarded to my Yahoo account as backup so I can still see it just as fast as if people send to Gmail.

Yahoo search- Has done a great job competing with Google and has added Flickr to it’s image searching.

Flickr-  vs. Zooomr? No contest. As much as I love Zooomr’s innovation, I long for a mass photo uploader and it still hasn’t been reactivated. Zooomr is free for me whereas I pay $25 p/y for Yahoo’s Flickr.

Delicious- Here is where I keep all of my bookmarks/favorites that sync with my computer(s).

Jumpcut- Since purchasing a video camera to document the newborn, where do I go for video hosting? I’ve been using Vimeo but for now, I will use Jumpcut, the Flickr for videos. You can even edit or make video mashups.

Mash- Yahoo failed to purchase Facebook and is trying to makeup for it by their new offering, Mash. I have a page but am slowly building it. Will it last? THAT depends on the users. People flocked to Facebook after Myspace became a haven for perverts, spammers and butt-ugly designs.

Upcoming- What’s going on? Check local events and see who is going. Saves to Yahoo calendar, iCal, GCal and Outlook to help your schedule. Integrates with Flickr for photos of the event.

Yahoo News- I’ve used MSNBC.com in the past but found that Yahoo News pulls different takes from a variety of sources for better context.

My Yahoo- My internet homepage designed my way. All the information on one screen.

Yahoo Go!- Yahoo for mobile so I can check my email, maps, sports, news, Flickr accounts and more.

RSS Feeds- Sorry, this is one area that Yahoo has not effectively touched on yet. Currently I have Feed Demon installed on my computers that even syncs online with their Newsgator service. So even if I am offline, I can still read the feeds. How nice would it be to have a Yahoo reader that allows you to save to Delicious for future reference?

Yahoo Maps- Over Google maps? This is a toughy. Both offer the same features with a slight edge to Google. But do I really NEED street views and Google Earth compatibility? We’ll see!

Yahoo Messenger- the popular instant messenger has free voice calling to other yahoos, webcams and texting to phones. I’ve been using Meebo for web-based chatting that includes Talk others but doesn’t have webcams. Yahoo it is.

Yahoo ID- one log in to rule them all

Want to keep up with me on Yahoo services? My Yahoo ID is "mojodenbow"

Interact With My Reactee

Photo Mojo on Reactee, originally uploaded by Photo-Mojo.

I found this cheap thrill online and just had to share. Reactee is a company that allows you to design (limited) a tee shirt with whatever you want to say. Others who see the tee shirt around can send a text message to a specific number and then receive a customized message. This is a good way to encourage interaction with the public, advertise or even pass on a friendly message.

I paid $20 for the tee which arrived 2 days later (wow!) and lets me change my custom message online for free. I chose to plug my photography biz- Photo Mojo so check it out! Text a message “photomojo” to 41411 and get back a message from me. This reminds me of the mobile app hit, Mozes. So far there has been numerous hits. Thanks!
Send a text message “photomojo” to the phone number 41411
On Mozes, send a text message technomojo to the phone number 66937 (Mozes)

I spend a lot of time on the internet. OK, make that a ginormous amount of time. I also contribute to the web frequently and in various fashions via text, photos, video etc. Even I can’t keep track of it all. I’ve found a way to pull more than a few of my content feeds together so people won’t HAVE to visit my websites, just this one. Yay!
